About our Instructors: 

Gene Padgitt is a 35-year industry veteran and specializes in large historic chimney and fireplace restoration, commercial brick oven construction, and residential outdoor ovens, masonry heaters, and fireplaces. Gene is a Certified Heater Mason by the MHA, a State Certified Fire Investigator, Licensed Master Mechanical Contractor, CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, NFI Certified Gas Specialist, and has a degree in HVACR Technology. Gene is often called upon for expert witness services by insurance companies and forensic companies. He has taught classes for industry
 conferences for 20 years.  Gene serves on the board of directors for the Midwest Chimney Safety Council. Gene is the Vice-president of HearthMasters, Inc. and Padgitt Forensic Investigations.

Marge Padgitt is a 32-year industry veteran and specializes in codes and standards, business, marketing, and technical and business instruction. She is a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep and NFI Certified Wood-burning Specialist, and approved NFI Trainer. Marge is the author of the Chimney and Hearth Pro's Resource Book and has more books in the works. She has served on the board of directors for the National Chimney Sweep Guild, Midwest Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Association, Masonry Heater Association of North America and Midwest Chimney Safety Council. Marge is the president of HearthMasters, Inc, and Padgitt Forensic Investigations.

Introduction toMasonry for Chimney Technicians 

 Sorry, we do not yet have a date for this class  Send an email to : to get on our mailing list and mention that you are interested in the Masonry for Chimney Technicians course. This class is geared towards chimney professionals who want to learn how to do basic masonry repairs that are commonly needed when doing chimney relining, minor masonry repair, and repairing or rebuilding a firebox. Participants will  attend classroom courses and learn about tools and equipment, mortar, bricks, block and stone, and get hands-on experience learning how to grind and point brick masonry joints, how to repair a firebox, how to build cement caps/crowns, how to cut out and replace a section of bricks to access a smoke chamber, how to repair a smoke chamber, and rebuild several courses of brick on an exterior chimney. We will also discuss block and stone chimneys, stucco application, and other forms of masonry fireplace restoration using pre-cast kits.

This class or a working knowledge of masonry is required before taking other classes. Bring your own masonry tools (we provide a list).
